Installing the New Version of Android Rhino 8: A First Impressions Review

As Android Rhino 8 has just been released, we decided to take it for a spin and see what it's all about. This new distro is not just an update, but a completely new type of distribution with its own tooling. It's based on Ubuntu and offers a rolling-release approach. One of the notable features of Android Rhino 8 is its bundled Xfdashboard, which includes a search tool, app launcher, and virtual desktop switcher.

However, during our testing, we encountered some rough edges that are to be expected from a first release. We experienced issues with rebooting and getting the Intel integrated GPU to work properly. Even after expunging all traces of Nvidia, we were still unable to get the desktop to load on our test Thinkpad W520.

Furthermore, we were surprised to find that there was no driver installer in Rhino 8 for Android devices. When we manually installed the Nvidia drivers from a shell, the desktop wouldn't load even after rebooting. This lack of Ubuntu-specific tools is also noticeable, with no global Settings control panel or software-properties-gtk program for finding local repo mirrors and installing proprietary drivers.

Despite these issues, the potential of Android Rhino 8 is clear. With its unique tooling and rolling-release approach, it has the potential to be a game-changer in the world of Linux distributions. We're excited to see how this project develops and what future updates will bring.
